Riley, they're goldfish. We're kids. Kids are the natural enemy of goldfish.
Maya to Riley

Girl Meets Fish is the eleventh episode in season 2 of Girl Meets World and the 32nd episode overall.[1] It aired on July 24, 2015 as a part of the Whodunnit Weekend to 2.2 million viewers.

Overview

It is Riley’s turn to take the class fish home for the weekend, but it dies as soon as she gets it. Auggie suspects foul play.

Plot

At school, Topanga and Auggie (dressed as Sherlock Holmes) are with Cory and the class as they wait for Farkle to return with the class fish, Chelsea, who means a great deal to Auggie. Riley is looking forward to taking care of the fish for a week, and Cory announces that if Riley brings Chelsea back safely then the fish will have survived the whole class. Farkle comes into class with Chelsea, and Auggie immediately suspects something is wrong; he asks Farkle if he went to Phil's Fish Store, but when Farkle acts evasive, Auggie points out there's a new castle in the fishbowl. After Farkle returns the fish (and after Auggie feeds it), Cory passes it to Riley, who is the last of the class to take the fish home with her. As Riley takes a selfie with the fish, she is distraught to see the fish is already dead. Riley blames herself for killing Chelsea, but Auggie believes otherwise. Inspired by his favorite TV show Owl Detective, Auggie suspects foul play and is determined to solve the mystery of "Whooooooo-dunnit".

At home, while Auggie, still in his Holmes garb, and Ava (as his Girl Friday) begin the case of the dead goldfish, Riley and Maya go to Phil's Fish Store to buy a new fish. "Fish Store Phil" is already familiar with Maya and her whole class, though Riley is a bit too innocent to realize that nobody else in the class has made it a whole year with the same fish. When Phil is unable to revive Chelsea, Riley picks another goldfish which looks like her as a replacement.

The entire class gathers in the Bay Window as Riley introduces them to the new Chelsea, which she dubs "Chelsea II". When Auggie enters, he tells the class he suspects one of them of being the fish "mur-deh-her". Auggie intends to question everyone involved, beginning with Farkle; Auggie and Ava deliberately munch on graham crackers in Farkle's face to make him uneasy, and he cracks under the pressure and admits to Riley that he killed the fish, and then explains how he lost three other fish: the first one was eaten in a bird bath, the second devoured in his cat's water dish, and then the third fell to its doom from the top of the Empire State Building. Even so, Farkle says he replaced the fish each time and made sure the fish he brought back to school was still alive when it was handed off to Riley.

Riley, Auggie and Ava then grill Lucas, who admits he himself lost two fish in an series of unfortunate baseball accidents. Next is Maya, who admits she herself lost seven fish. Riley refuses to believe her classmates' collective carelessness until Maya takes Riley back to the Bay Window and demands to know how many of the others have lost a fish; much to Riley's disbelief, they all raise their hands. Maya then asks them how many they have lost, and they each hold up multiple fingers. Disgusted, Maya sends them all away.

As Auggie, Ava, Riley, Maya, Lucas and Farkle pay their respects to the lost fish and honor the latest Chelsea (#105), Riley still wonders who killed the fish that was alive in the classroom. When Ava stops Auggie as he is about to feed graham cracker crumbs to the new fish, Auggie, thinking back to when he fed the fish in Cory's class, realizes that he himself killed Chelsea 104 and begins to feel guilty. As Topanga tries to comfort Auggie he wonders if he will ever feel better, but then Riley gives him Chelsea 105 and tells him she trusts him to take better care of her. Later, Riley takes the entire class to Phil's to get another fish (Chelsea 106) for the whole class with the promise that they will care for it so it will last its whole natural life; Fish Store Phil gives them a goldfish on the house.

At school, Riley, Maya and the others wonder what secret lesson Cory was teaching them with the fish. When Cory says there was no lesson other than what they themselves came up with, Riley and the class talk about the importance of properly caring for living things. Pleased with what the kids have learned, Cory reveals his ulterior motive for the lesson as he hands out permission slips for the class trip to the Berkshire mountains. Cory tells the class he wants them all to look out for each other so they can have a safe trip.

In the epilogue, Fish Store Phil is about to close up shop for the night, and feeds all of his fish before leaving, calling each one of them Chelsea as drops fish food in each of the bowls.

Quotes

Riley: This goldfish is going to live fifteen years.
Cory: Why's that?
Maya: Because there's supposed to be that much life in her.
Lucas: And everything alive deserves to be-
Farkle: -cared for the right way.
Cory: Very good. Oh, by the way!
Riley and Maya: I knew it!
Cory: Permission slips for the class retreat. We're going to the Berkshire Mountains this year. I want you to all watch out for each other. Let's bring everybody home, safe and sound. You think you can do that? Yeah, I think you can, too.
Maya: All right. How many of you knocked off a fish? How many fish you all knocked off?
Riley: Et tu, Yogi?
Maya: No, he ate three.
Phil: Maya!
Maya: Phil.
Riley: Oh, you two know each other?
Phil: Actually, I'm familiar with your whole class.
Riley: Oh. Do you have a son or daughter at John Q Adams?
Phil: Well, you might say I have a whole school of kids at John Q Adams.
Riley: What a random and curious comment to make, Fish Store Phil.
Phil: You gonna keep this one alive, Bird Bath? What you laughing at, slugger?
Lucas: Nothing.
Auggie: This wraps up the case of the Fish Who Ate The Graham Cracker. Now that I heard the name of the case, I guess I should have known what happened.
Auggie: I fed Chelsea graham crackers.
Topanga: Maybe that wasn't it?
Ava: Oh, it was it.
Topanga: Ava!
Farkle: She's right. Graham crackers expand in water.
Topanga: Farkle!
Lucas: He's right. So the crumbs expanded in her.
Topanga: Lucas!
Maya: He's right.
Topanga: Maya!
Ava: Auggie, you can't feed a fish graham crackers!
Auggie: Can't?
Ava: No!
Auggie: Well, this seems like the real problem.
Auggie: Okay, you're all free to go. Don't nobody leave town.
Lucas: It was impossible. Impossible, I tells ya'.
Lucas: So, this is the hot seat, huh?
Ava: It is when you're in it, Big Boy.
Auggie: Ava!
Riley: Lucas!
Lucas: Me?
Farkle: I took Chelsea to the bird bath. She looked like she was having such a great time. I didn't think anything when the first bird sat on the telephone wire. Before you knew it, I couldn't see the sky any more. Did you know goldfish can scream.
Riley: They can't.
Farkle: Then it was me! I scream like a goldfish.
Phil: Okay, we'll go that way. Uh, young lady, how would you like to watch your goldfish loved one swim to that great fish bowl in the sky?
Riley: I would like that very much, Fish Store Phil. Yes. How does she get there?
Phil: Well, the 4:15 express is leaving right now.
Riley: Get her on it. Get her on it.
Maya: Close your eyes with me, Riley. Let's bow our heads.
Riley: Of course. What was that?
Maya: That was the sound of Chelsea's fish soul swimming up to fish heaven.
Riley: But it sounded a lot like a toilet.
Phil: Oh, she doesn't -
Maya: No, this one's very trusting and sensitive.
Phil: Oh, I like people like that. Do you got your own debit card, young lady?
Maya: Phil!
Phil: I'm sorry.
Auggie: The other woman in my life. Some call her Topanga. I call her mommy.
Cory: Okay, Riley. She's all yours. Now, all you have to do is feed her once a day, and every once in a while you throw her a compliment.
Topanga: You are talking about the fish, right?
Cory: No.
Maya: Riley, they're goldfish. We're kids. Kids are the natural enemy of goldfish and the natural meal ticket of Fish Store Phil who makes a fortune off of us.
Riley: How can he make a fortune, Maya? They cost a dollar each.
Maya: He sells them to every kid in every school in every class in the tri-state area. You do the math! 'cause you know me and math.
Maya: You'll never break me, Auggie.
Auggie: Oh, you'll blink first.
Maya: What makes you so sure?
Auggie: I'm an owl.
Riley: Lucas, you ran the bases?
Lucas: I had to. Otherwise she died for nothing.
Farkle: I was too ashamed to tell you about our trip to the Empire State Building. I took her all the way up and sat her on the ledge. And I said lean back a little. And she listened to me.
Farkle: And surprisingly, as smart as I am, you would think I'd have learnt the lesson not to put the fish in a bird bath. This one I put in my cat's water dish.
Auggie: I want to talk to Farkle, first.
Farkle: Why? 'cause you think I'll crack? Well, I'm not the one who's gonna crack, pally boy. It's gonna take a lot better than you to crack me.
Riley: Chelsea is replaced. So ends the long, glorious reign of Chelsea the first. Long live Chelsea 2.
Riley: What will happen to her now?
Phil: Oh, she'll go in the potty.
Riley: The potty?
Maya: Whoop, whoop. The potty!
Riley: It's our class goldfish, Chelsea. She made it through the whole year. Right up until it my turn to take her home. And then she- And then she- Is she dead? Because she's either dead or she's so, so very tired. Can you wake her up, Fish Store Phil?
Auggie: Elementary, my dear Farkle. There's a new castle in the bowl.
Lucas: Very impressive, Auggie.
Auggie: Hey, Farkle, did you go to Phil's Fish Store?
Farkle: Why would you ask me that, Auggie? Why would you think that? Why would you say that? Why?
Farkle: It's Chelsea. It is.
Riley: Then it's as good as done. You know I am fantastic with pets.
Auggie: Mr. Puffles.
Riley: That was sad.
