Overview

Riley finds out the hard way that getting a bad grade in high school will count toward her permanent record.

Plot

In Spanish Class, Riley and Maya’s Spanish teacher would like the class to only speak in Spanish for the lesson. Their teacher, Señora Feinstein-Chang, gives back the results from the first test they took in her class. Maya did very well with an ‘A’ but Riley got a ‘D’ - her first bad grade.

At Topanga’s, the group is sitting at their usual table however Riley is sitting behind as she ‘doesn’t deserve to sit with them anymore’. Her friends try to make her feel better about the bad grade, telling her that ‘it’s only one grade’ and Maya once got 5 D’s in one day. Smackle says that the grade Riley got will go on her permanent record and she may not get into college. Lucas and Zay state that they are trying out for the baseball team (since the football team made it clear that they didn’t like them) and Maya spends some time talking to her A.

The girls return to the Matthews’ apartment and are having their dinner. Maya asks why Cory hasn’t asked about their day yet and Auggie says he learned the cursive letter ‘D’ and point to the piece of paper over Riley’s face with the letter D drawn on it. Maya shows the family the test grade they got and they all get excited and they then try to console Riley while Topanga braids ‘her new daughter’s’-Maya’s- hair.

Cory visits Señora Feinstein-Chang’s classroom to talk with her about Riley’s grade. Cory tells her that she should be helping to build her students’ self-confidence however she tells him that hood teachers should be able to get their students to do that themselves.

Riley waits outside the classroom for her father and deflates when he comes out with a similar expression on his face. He points out that she doesn’t know any of the students in the hall yet and her Spanish teacher doesn’t know her yet either.

At The Bay Window, Maya is trying to help Riley study for Spanish. Lucas comes in and says her is like Riley, all of a sudden he is a loser. Zay comes through the window and says he is like Maya, all of a sudden he is a phenom, then the two do a handshake. Riley tries to copy them and Lucas stands there doing nothing. The boys then say why they were feeling that way, they had their first baseball tryout that day and Lucas didn’t make the team-despite it usually coming east to him- and Zay did. Farkle then comes in saying that there is another genius in he’s Chem class and is making him feel bad. It then turns out that Smackle was the genius making him feel bad.

Topanga comes to the kitchen to find out that Riley had been up all night studying Spanish (she learned how to conjugate the Spanish verb Chewbacca). Topanga then leaves to go to Riley’s school. Topanga and Señora Feinstein-Chang talk and Topanga thanks her for pushing Riley to be her best.

Topanga returns home and tells the girls that Señora Feinstein-Chang was in early because she is a good teacher. Topanga pulls Cory to the side and tells him that everyone knows Riley is a good student-including her Spanish teacher. Teacher Cory decides that ‘good’ isn’t good enough anymore and leaves after father Cory tells her to ‘go get ‘em’.

Riley chases after her Spanish teacher in the hallways and is told that she can’t have a make-up test or do anything for extra credit as the D is part of a weekly test that tells her what Riley knows that week.

In her bedroom, Riley is sitting on the floor when Farkle come in through the window, Riley asks what he is going to do about Smackle and Farkle tells her that he has a problem, he could raise his level however that would only make Smackle raise her level too. Riley decides that she will have to raise her level in Spanish class as well because her always being a good student and Farkle always being the smartest student in the class isn’t good enough anymore. Riley then begins to study her Spanish textbook in preparation for the next test.

In class the next day, Riley walks in and speaks Spanish ‘very good’

The friends are then early to Cory’s lesson and Maya decides that she wants an A in his class too-she is collecting a full set of them. Zay says that he had such a good day at tryouts and thought the coach would put him on varsity and Lucas says that he didn’t even deserve to make junior varsity with the way he was practicing, they both made junior varsity. Cory then knew ‘all along’ that ‘good teachers look down the road to someone’s possibilities’ and what they know now is never good enough because there’s so much out there for them to learn even though they won’t always understand it all.

At the dinner table, Riley reveals that she got an A- on her latest Spanish test and Auggie got a gold star on his work and everyone cheers for him as Topange puts it on the fridge in place of Maya’s A.

Quotes

Riley: [to Farkle] It has to matter that who we were affects who we are. You chose Smackle because you want to raise your level. That's who you are.
Cory: Good isn't good enough anymore.
Farkle: I used to think of you as my intellectual superior.
Smackle: I did too, but now I see us as equals.
Maya, Riley, Zay and Lucas: Aww!
Farkle: Good, then you're not as smart as I thought.
Lucas: Aww!...I hate it when that happens.
Riley: [about Maya and Zay] Well, I'm happy for you guys.
Maya: Of course you are. You're Riley. You've always been Riley.
Lucas: Riley, we're losers. Do you know what's on our permanent record?
Riley: Glitter and smiley faces if we try try again?
Lucas: LOSERS!
Riley: La papa es un buen barco de vela. (The potato am a good sailboat)
Maya: Esa es mi chica, Roberta! La papa es un buen barco de vela. (That's my girl, Roberta! The potato am a good sailboat)
Riley: SIT DOWN.
Cory: Good teachers look down the road to someone's possibilities. What you know now is never good enough for a good teacher. Because there's so much out there to learn. And sometimes you won't get it at all, and sometimes it may seem like we're speaking to you in a foreign language, but you know what? There are good teachers here, and I'm looking forward to being one of them.
