Back in Texas, Lucas and Zay were best friends until Lucas was expelled from school after getting into a fight caused by Zay running his mouth off. Afterward, when Lucas' dad was transferred to New York City in the beginning of the series, Zay was never mentioned until his first appearance in Girl Meets the Secret of Life after his dad was also transferred to New York City. When Maya asks Zay if Lucas and him were really best friends back in Texas, Zay responds that 'there were never better friends'.

Zay: Oh yeah, it's my fault. Look at ya!
Zay: So I could have taken him, right?
Lucas: Sure. Why do you keep finding yourself in these situations?
Zay: Well I like knowing you have my back.
Lucas: So what're you doing here, Zay?
Zay: Maybe I miss my best friend, alright? Maybe I had a friend in Texas and he moved away and I miss hanging out with him. And I convinced my entire family to pack everything-
Lucas: Your dad got transferred?
Zay: Yeah, same as you.
Lucas: Look, I'm glad you're here buddy. But I don't wanna have to keep being the same guy you knew back in Texas.
Zay: Yeah, I'm not so sure you are.
Zay: (Dances in his seat).
Maya: (grabs Zay by his shirt)
Zay: Do it.
Lucas: (grabs Maya's hand and puts it on his shirt) He's under my protection. You wanna tangle with me?
Zay: One dollar to look at the freak.
Lucas: Oh be quiet 'flat-butt'.
Zay: What? I had no idea.
Lucas: Your going to let jellybeans decide my future?
Zay: Well, who's gonna decide your future? You?
